Cape Seed Bread

Cook Time: 1 Hour Temperature: 400°F


  • 2 1/3 cups Whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup Bulgar
  • 1 cup Roasted sunflower seeds
  • 1 ½ tbsp. Honey
  • 1 tsp. Baking soda
  • 2 cups Buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp. Salt
  • Sesame and poppy seeds, for sprinkling


Preheat oven to 400F.

In a large mixing bowl, combine whole wheat flour, bulgar, sunflower seeds, and salt.

Mix buttermilk, baking soda, and honey. Let sit for 1 minute.

Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients, mix with a wooden spoon or spatula to moisten all dry ingredients.

Put the mixture in the Lekue Bread Maker. Sprinkle with a lot of sesame and poppy seeds.

Close the bread maker and put into the oven for 45 minutes.

After 45 minutes, turn oven off but leave the bread in for another 15 minutes.

Take the bread out of the oven, leave to cool on a wire rack.
